Performance with Kronos Quartet

My great-great grandfather, Look Tin Eli, was born in Mendocino, CA in 1870. When he was 14, he left to visit family in China and was denied re-entry into the U.S. due to the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act. He sued the Circuit Court of San Francisco and won, and it became a landmark case for immigration rights and birthright citizenship that was later cited in the Supreme Court (U.S. v. Wong Kim Ark). In the years following, Look Tin Eli played a pivotal role in the protection and development of San Francisco’s iconic Chinatown and its community. Tonight @sfjazz I’ll be hosting a live ‘radio’ show and interviewing a community historian, David Lei, about this case and other examples of how Chinese Americans fought against discrimination and defined many core tenets of American life as we know today. I’ll conclude with a live performance with @kronos_quartet who have been the catalyst & curator for this event celebrating their 50th year of new music.
